At its core, the film blends three layers: an anthropological record of a community bound to an enduring way of life; an underlying social reflection on Lithuania’s generational divide— between the young and those, like Arūnas, who came of age under the Soviet system; and a creative exploration of time inspired by Baltic amber lore—a material once linked to the passing of time and the afterlife. Amber, a fossilized resin that preserves fragments of ancient life, became the film’s central metaphor. Like amber, documentary film captures time, holding people within moments. This parallel shaped my entire artistic vision, from the cinematography and narrative structure to the integration of archival materials.

Francesco Rufini is an Italian-born documentary filmmaker based in Kaunas, Lithuania. He began to practice filmmaking while studying BA in Anthropology at the University of Bologna and continued with an MFA in Film Directing at the Edinburgh College of Art. His debut short documentary “Dogma”(2018) premiered at the 72nd Edinburgh IFF.
