She made her first film in her thirties, agreed to marry on the condition that her husband take her around the world, and made history with what is widely regarded as the first openly lesbian erotic film to present sexuality from a woman’s perspective. These are just a few of the remarkable facts about Barbara Hammer, one of the most important experimental LGBTQIA+ filmmakers. This biographical film reconstructs her life through footage she shot herself and voice recordings that chart the changes in her voice over the years. It explores themes that ran throughout her life and work: the body, sexuality, love, ageing and queer identity. Hammer lived boldly, wildly and freely, transforming her personal experience into a radical and innovative cinematic language.
