David Hockney is one of the most celebrated British artists, who rose to prominence in the 1970s as a representative of the Pop Art movement. From painting to photography, collages, and digital art, Hockney has explored nearly every medium in his creative practice. Lesser known is his great passion for music, which is particularly evident in his work as a costume and set designer for opera. Using his characteristic painting techniques, David Hockney transforms opera performances into a magical and colorful experience. Although Hockney’s hearing has begun to deteriorate due to a congenital condition, his dedication to this work remains undiminished, and the results he has achieved on the opera stage are the culmination of his love for music and art. David Hockney: The Colors of Music is an intimate portrait of Hockney, revealing him as a talented and visionary set designer.
Lithuanian émigré Marytė Kavaliauskas spent many years making documentary films about famous artists living in the United States, including Roy Lichtenstein, Frank Stella, and Joan Mitchell. The film about Hockney was shot between 1991 and 1993, but due to the need to find additional funding to complete it, it was not released until 10 years later, in 2003.
