Don't Get Upset, Virginius

The by director and cinematographer Viktoras Starošas is considered to be one of the first Lithuanian attempts to get rid of the stereotypes that ruled Soviet documentary. Though the film is clearly a testimony of “social welfare”, there are signs more liberal directing: voice-over is de-canonized, the narrative power is given to a film's main hero, little Virginius.

Viktoras Starošas

Lithuanian cinematographer filmed documentaries and newsreels for many years. Together with his colleagues and friends were those who revived the Lithuanian Film Studio (Lietuvos kino studija). Since 1952 has been directing films as well, and remained the cinematographer of all of his own films. In his documentary films, Viktoras Starošas did not avoid thorny subjects, highlighted moral and social problems. He is one of the first directors to introduce Lithuanian documentary with author's voice.
