The Unknown Known

Donald Rumsfeld, America's controversial former defence minister, was one of the so-called architects behind the country's invasion in Iraq. He is known for wriggling out of any kind of trouble thanks to his enormous rhetorical talent – and for leaving behind thousands of memos with cryptical “notes to self”, called snowflakes. Errol Morris has read through them all, and in his new film he sits face to face with Rumsfeld to find out what goes on behind the impenetrable facade that many people love to hate. The conversation sizzles between the brash and notoriously curious Morris and the self-conscious 'hawk' progressing towards the film's surprising end. Errol Morris has done it again.

BBC, CNN, Panorama – every day a flow of news attacks us: interests of big and influential countries, conflicts and their causes, decisions of the bigwigs of politics and their consequences, unrests, wars, and victims... All of this weaves into a fragmentary globe of repetative news, there is no end to this meaninglessness... What is happeing in the head of the world's key politicians when they are up to decide if it is now the right moment to start a war? The decision is a puzzle with many Xs, to solve which one needs intellect, intuition, charisma, and philosophical worldview. V. L.
