A Promise

What happens to two peoples' feelings when they are formalised in marriage? Love can be stifled under the pressure of this contract, or it can blossom into a bond of unimagined depth when faced with eternity. Why do two people choose to make a promise to each other? In their documentary reflection on relationships, marriage and divorce, Levin Peter and Elsa Kremser, both filmmakers and a young couple, look for answers to these questions. Levin got married when he was 20 and divorced four years later. But it was only after his divorce that he began to ask himself what marriage really means. In his new relationship with Elsa the impetus to examine this in film is aroused. Driven by a very personal story, the film interweaves an ensemble of different couples and concepts of marriage. A Promise gently explores a web of hopes and dreams, fear and dependency, loyalty and trust.

Levin Peter

Levin Peter was born in 1985 in Jena, Germany. His first film projects he realised during his time at school. As part of his A-Level he made a documentary about the national uprising of 17th June 1953 in the GDR. After that, he started to work in different post-production companies. In August 2006 he visited the occupied tower block Prestes Maia in Sao Paulo. That experience inspired him to shoot a documentary about the biggest occupied tower block in the whole of Latin America, together with Jonas Ginter. This project was realised in co-production with ZDF/ARTE in 2008. In September 2008 he started studying at the Filmakademie Baden-Wuerttemberg, where he specialised in documentaries.
