The Wings of Lituanika

The film is dedicated to the 50th anniversary of Steponas Darius’ and Stasys Girėnas’ historic flight across the Atlantic Ocean. Every Lithuanian knows the story of Darius and Girėnas, but what does it really mean?

Following the newsreels of undisturbed lucidity where Darius and Girėnas are still preparing for the flight, Verba inserts monologues of old intellectuals who still remember the flight as a part of their lives and try to guess the reasons behind the tragedy. The verdict is passed by the narrator citing a joke of journalists at the time: “Now the funeral would cost us more that a good plane would have.” The voice of the narrator, who reads newspapers during 1983, news about the flight and commentates on the events, reminds one of the voice that people used to hear on the Voice of America.
