Polish writer Henryk Grynberg takes the viewer on his haunting journey back to a small town in Poland where 45 years ago his family were hiding from Holocaust persecutions. Trying to uncover the secrets of his father’s and two year-old brother’s disappearance, he returns to his birthplace seeking out people who knew his family and witnessed the events as well as those who in one way or another contributed to the crime. Some greet him warmly, seemingly happy to see that he survived, whereas others greet him warily, and are outwardly polite. Perhaps most chilling is his interview with an elderly peasant farmer whose contempt for Jews remains palpable after decades. At the end of his journey, the writer not only finds out who murdered his father but also finds his remains.
