Rubik’s road is a bicycle path connecting Rīga and Jūrmala, and is still unofficially dubbed after the former Soviet Latvia Communist Party leader. While we filmed walkers, joggers, cyclist, dogs, birds, trains, mopeds and planes, Latvian citizen Alfrēds Rubiks, who strongly opposed Latvian independence, was elected to the European Parliament.

Laila Pakalniņa
She was born in 1962 in Liepāja, Latvia. She studied film directing at the Moscow Film Institute and TV journalism at Moscow University. She has directed and written several short film and documentaries as well as three full length films, which have been shown at the Cannes and Venice film festivals. Her film The Shoe (Kurpe, 1998) was selected for the Un Certain Regard section at the 1998 Cannes Film Festival. Pakalnina’s compelling films are stunning to watch as they are so visual and colourful. Her stories are often carried with gentle irony and strong symbolism.
